Dr. Jaime R. Torres earned a Medical Doctor degree from Universidad Central de Venezuela, Caracas, Venezuela, in 1972, followed by a Clinical Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Louisiana State University, Department of Internal Medicine, from 1976 to 1978. He completed a Master in Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University in 1979. Currently a Full Professor in Tropical Medicine at the School of Medicine, Universidad Central de Venezuela (tenured since 1984), he also serves as the Head of the Infectious Diseases Section at the Tropical Medicine Institute, a position he has held since 1990. Since 2001, he has been a moderator for ProMED-esp, a branch of ProMED-mail under the International Society for Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Jaime R. Torres has an extensive scientific portfolio, with over 160 articles published in indexed journals, authorship of 20 chapters in specialized medical books, and co-editorship of 5 specialized volumes.
His primary research focuses on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of infectious and tropical diseases, with particular attention to isolated Amerindian communities. His expertise spans malaria, viral hepatitis, dengue, Zika, chikungunya, neurocysticercosis, atypical mycobacterial infections, and HIV/AIDS.
